BABIES AND CHILDREN are extra sensitive to the sun, and protecting their skin is vital. Luckily, with good sun habits, including proper clothing and sunscreen, children can enjoy all sorts of outdoor activities without risking their health. Learn more HERE. Over time, the sun’s rays can seriously damage THE EYES and surrounding skin, leading to vision loss and conditions from cataracts and macular degeneration to eye and eyelid cancers. However, some simple protective strategies practiced daily can help keep our eyes and the sensitive skin around them healthy throughout our lives. Learn more HERE.
HEAT AWARENESS & SAFETY. One of the most significant health risks to be aware of this summer is the heat especially in areas where there is excessive humidity. Heat related illnesses can affect people of all ages, and these illnesses tend to progress quickly, so it is essential that you know what to look for. In recent years, excessive heat has caused more deaths than all other weather events, including floods. A heat wave is a prolonged period of excessive heat, generally 10 degrees or more above average, often combined with excessive humidity. Learn more about HEAT WAVE SAFETY HERE.
SKIN CANCER is the most common cancer in the United States. Most cases of MELANOMA, the deadliest kind of skin cancer, are caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. To lower your skin cancer risk, protect your skin from the sun and avoid indoor tanning. Learn more about SKIN CANCER HERE and check out all THE FACTS you should know HERE.
SKIN CANCER RATES UP: SURGEON GENERAL WARNS TO COVER UP: U.S. skin cancer rates rose more than 200 percent from 1973 to 2011, more than any other kind of cancer. Over 63,000 melanoma cases are diagnosed every year and almost 9,000 die from it. It's also the most preventable cancer.
One way to prevent skin cancer is to cover up, and sunscreen is typically a go-to to protect skin in the summer heat. However, recent data has suggested that while sunscreens add protection, they aren’t necessarily up to snuff and often brands make coverage claims they can’t really deliver. Ask your dermatologist for the SUNSCREEN that suits you best. Learn more HERE.
