The Dirt Farmer Foundation’s CAUSE it’s MAY: Our Military Kids

The Dirt Farmer Foundation is our way of focusing the social media power of the Dirt Farmer’s community to help worthwhile charities.

Our CAUSE it’s MAY or Cause of the Month is:

"Empowering children with sports, arts and enrichment during parent deployment or recovery"

Our Military Kids, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, supports children, ages 5-12th grade, of deployed National Guard and Reserve service members and children of wounded warriors from all service branches. Grants pay for participation in activities that help children cope with stress and anxiety while their parents are recovering or absent.

Our Military Kids provides grants that allow kids to choose activities they enjoy.

WHY DOES THIS PROGRAM EXIST? Of the 2 million children affected by wartime deployment since 9/11, one out of three is at high risk for psychological issues, such as anxiety or depression. Research shows activity counteracts stress.

Our Military Kids grants allow children to choose activities they enjoy while their parents are away or recovering.

As a result, they experience higher self-esteem and the chance to achieve.

As a bonus, active kids help improve morale for entire families.

WHO DO THEY HELP? Our Military Kids helps children of deployed National Guard and Reserve service members and children of wounded warriors from all service branches. Learn more HERE.

National Guard and Reserve families sometimes have trouble accessing support services from military installations.

During deployments, these families may lose income when their military member leaves a civilian job to accept a military position overseas.

The loss of income and lack of resources can create gaps that are hard on families. Our Military Kids, fills these gaps with a simple grant program that pays for children’s activities. Within days of receiving applications from eligible families, the staff at the Our Military Kids office will send special “Top Secret” packets to children, thanking them for their service to our country. Checks are sent directly to specified activity providers.

When military members are injured in service to our country, their families face many changes

They may have to move closer to medical care or change their comfortable routines.

Children must often “take a back seat,” while parents deal with more pressing issues related to medical care, financial strains, and other adult responsibilities.

Our Military Kids grants ease financial strains on parents, while giving their children positive activities that help them laugh, grow, and feel connected.

Our Military Kids grants pay for participation in sports, fine arts, and academic tutoring programs.

HOW MUCH ARE THE GRANTS? Each grant may be up to $500 and cover up to six months of activity per child. How established is this program? Since April 2005, Our Military Kids has delivered more than 60,000 grants, totaling over $24.5 million, to children of service members from throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam.

Currently using only private donations, Our Military Kids has provided at least one grant for each eligible applicant.

For every dollar donated, 92 cents directly supports each child.

HOW DO I KNOW THIS PROGRAM WORKS? In October 2017, Our Military Kids surveyed 1104 families who received grants that year: - 94% reported a decrease in the child’s stress - 71% indicated improvement in the child’s academic performance - 95% noticed enhanced recovery of the service member/veteran - 98% believed the program enhanced overall family well-being It works. Our Military Kids has the credentials to prove it. Learn more HERE.
