The Dirt Farmer Foundation’s CAUSE it’s JANUARY: Homeless Shelters

The Dirt Farmer Foundation is our way of focusing the social media power of the Dirt Farmer’s community to help worthwhile charities.

Our CAUSE it’s JANUARY or Cause of the Month is:

***HOMELESS SHELTERS***

Homeless shelters provide a temporary warm, safe place to sleep for homeless individuals and families who otherwise may risk death from exposure or unsafe activity on the street. Sadly, Homelessness has increased this year amid worsening affordable housing shortages in certain cities across the US.

WHY ARE PEOPLE HOMELESS? Many factors can contribute to a person becoming homeless. These factors include (but are not limited to): Poverty, Lack of affordable housing, Job loss, Lack of health care, Mental illness, Substance abuse, Domestic violence. Learn more HERE.

According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Homelessness crept up in the U.S., especially among individuals with long-term disabling condition. HUD’s 2017 Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress found that 553,742 persons experienced homelessness on a single night in 2017, an increase of .7 percent since last year. Homelessness among families with children declined 5.4 percent nationwide since 2016, local communities report the number of persons experiencing long-term chronic homelessness and Veterans increased. This shelter is in our town, and many of our patients (I work as a RN in a pediatric office) have stayed here while they get back on their feet. I've learned a great deal about the "shelter system", but there is never enough to help all those who need it. I've seen young mothers with newborns in shelters. SO SAD.
