Our CAUSE it's MAY or Cause of the Month is:
"Together we can end illiteracy and give all children the chance to Become successful readers for life. It all starts With Their first book. "
Learning to read is critical to a child's success - both in school and in life. Literacy is one of the best predictors of a child's future success. But a child without access to books will not have the chance to become an engaged and capable reader. This is the reality for children who are growing up in poverty; books are scarce. In some of the lowest-income neighborhoods in the country there is only one book available for every 300 children. Children and adults who are illiterate or have low literacy skills have poor educational, employment and health outlooks. Many of them will not graduate from high school, will earn barely enough to stay above poverty levels, and will be more likely to engage in criminal and anti-social behaviors. The social problems of illiteracy affect every one of us, but these are problems we can solve.
Forty-two percent of children in the United States-more than 30 million-live in low-income Households. Most of these children have no age-appropriate books at home, and the classrooms and programs they attend are woefully under-resourced. Approximately two-thirds of these schools and programs can not afford to buy books at retail prices. How to Overcome illiteracy?
That's where First Book comes in. A recognized leader in social enterprise, First Book has pioneered groundbreaking channels to provide new books and educational resources at deeply reduced prices - and for free - to schools and programs serving children in need. They provide the teachers and the administrators the program with greater purchasing power and access to high-quality books that would not be available to them otherwise. Through First Book, educators can create enriched learning experiences for their students, and the children can enjoy an ongoing supply of wonderful new books. First Book is focused on impact: they leverage the work of heroic teachers, give the volunteers the tools they need, and help raise reading scores.
To date, First Book has distributed more than 100 million books and educational resources to programs and schools serving children from low-income families throughout the United States and Canada. First Book is transforming the lives of children in need and elevating the quality of education by making new, high-quality books available on an ongoing basis. First Book is uniquely positioned to become a leader in providing digital resources so that children in need do not miss out. No matter how formats and technologies change, children from low-income families will still need access to rich and varied content. First Book is helping guide the publishing industry as it evolves so that all children can benefit from new technologies and flourish as readers.

"Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope. It is a tool for daily life in modern society. It is a bulwark against poverty, and a building block of development, an essential complement to investments in roads, dams, clinics and factories. Literacy is a platform for democratization, and a vehicle for the promotion of culture and national identity. Especially for girls and women, it is an agent of family health and nutrition. For everyone, everywhere, literacy is, Along with general education in basic human right .... Literacy is, finally, the road to human progress and the means through Which every man, woman and child can Realize his or her full potential."
- Kofi Annan
