The Dirt Farmer spends countless hours every day listening to FV Players complain about their game. We try to find the issues before you do and try to get a solution to you as soon as we can. It's very easy to find the small bugs and glitches but I've decided it's may be time to look at the bigger picture, to explore why there seems to be such a rift between 'We the Players' and 'the Zynga Developers'.

What I think I may have discovered might just sum up this game's psychology as a whole.

First let's look at We the Players. We are "collectors" in nature. We collect foals, trees, sheep. But, what really drives the players in Farmville is their desire to SHARE. We just gotta have that new tree first so we can make 50 of them and SHARE them with our friends. We just gotta buy that new Stallion so we can make foals for our friends. We spend hours collecting love potions to make those rare sheep for our friend... 'WE the PLAYERS' love to share.

Now let's look at Zynga and explore the exact polar opposite.

When we think of Zynga the first word we think of is GREED. They price test us for the biggest price tag they can place on an item to sell it. They place item in special packages for farm cash that unsuspecting players could achieve for free. The company as a whole seems to be driven by GREED and SHOW.

So we have SHARING vs. GREED. How can a group of people driven by GREED keep creating features for a game loved by people who are driven by SHARING.

Now let's look at We the Players who "mentor" other players. The Gurus, Fan Page Owners and Mega Players who go out of their way to educate and inform all their friends on bugs and glitches in the game. The effort and detail to professionalism displayed by sites such as FV Rant Radio, The Faux Farmer, FV Nation, FV Freak, FV Feed, The Farmer's Daughter and too many more to list. All surpass in detail and effort those of the game developers itself. Again we see a distinct polar opposite between We the Players and Zynga.

So let's call this QUALITY vs. LACK of QUALITY. Again complete opposites.

I wondered why there was such a contrast of behavior between We the Players and Zynga. Then I started thinking about the people who work in the gaming industry. Mostly young tech driven folks. I would guess outwardly liberal with strong views on doing what's "right". Unfortunately this generation is prone to lapses in quality due to a distinct lack of "life experience" from way too many hours spent starring at a computer screen. You are not born with a strong work ethic. It is developed through your real life experiences. They most likely developed a great deal of their social graces from playing World of Warcraft and Call of Duty. This leads to the development of an inbred adversarial psychosis where they tend to see their friends and even clients as a confrontation and not as "neighbors". This may explain why things just happen to not work right. Subliminally they are "sticking it" to us.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not going to bash Zynga this whole article. They are, collectively, very creative. The graphics and features are very impressive. It's sad that the work they put into the creative aspect of the game just eclipses the effort put into making the game work.

I've not only been thinking PROBLEM. That's not in my nature. I also have to think SOLUTION.

For WE the PLAYERS I have a very simple solution. Play YOUR game YOUR way. It's as simple as that. Don't let Zynga dictate the way you play. If you don't want to do the Quests then DON'T. If you don't want to buy Farm Cash then DON'T. If you don't want to play 12 hours a day then DON'T. Also don't harass players who do want to play at a more rapid level. Let them play their game their way as well.

For Zynga. I have a harsh reality for you. Your Developers are Generation TECH. They want instant success and instant gratification for as little work as possible. The 50 Million players that have left the game because it never works right are just like the Zynga Developers. They left due to the fact that they could not stand all the bugs and meltdowns. They wanted instant gratification and were delivered a product that doesn't work. You are however left with 30 Million of We the Players who DO NOT think like you do. WE the PLAYERS endure and we fight because we know how hard life is. We'd like instant success but we know that the journey is just as challenging. In other words...Your own "nature" has shed the people who are most like You the Zynga and left you with people who are your exact opposite...WE the PLAYERS  It's time for you to adapt and possibly not only save the 30 Million but bring back 50 Million more.

What I would do. Hire a strict well organized professional in charge of the Development Suite. Preferably someone with a military background. I'd go with a Marine. Their Tech Skills are not nearly as important as their work ethic and standards of detail. This would be the END ALL GET IT DONE position in charge of making sure the "logistics" of the game worked. The Bugs need to be identified and fixed. New features need to be tested in REAL TIME to assure they actually work once released. From the outrageous size difference in the foals to items we need for quests that do not work. These are simple make-a-list plan-your-work-work-your-plan measure-twice-cut-once details that everyone knows. I personally don't want the guy in charge of fixing the gift box issue (That's been broke for more than 18 months) hanging out with his dog at the Sundae Bar at work all day. I've seen those stories of SUCCESSFUL companies with tons of freebie employee perks. Those companies have products that actually run well. You need someone to organize, focus and drive all that creativity and tech savvy into a "well oiled" machine. With your pending IPO. If you think this isn't what potential investors are looking at...You're in for a damn surprise, Bubba

  2. My thoughts entirely! Most of us would be more than happy if they could just get the basics of the game working properly - eg, the gift box, gift accepting from the FB game requests page, etc. Play all you want with the extra bits, i.e. the quests, extra features, FV$ items, but at least get the basics right.

  6. I love what you had to say i am a level 1000+ player who has had friends call me cheater for stuffing belted cows. Yes i run a snag bar but you can't play FV without a snag bar of some sort. You need several hundred items to build a building. All players should remember We pay zynga's pay checks by Buying Farm cash, instead of ticking us off they should be doing things to keep us old players from quiting. If they can do that we can tell our friends who have quit ZYNGA has pulled their heads out of Asses & made the game playable. I think Zynga spends more time figuring out how make another $1,000,000 than fixing problems. The Buying Fv cash to get the item had to be making money even if we only bought 4 fv cah for $1, I personaly bought lots of $1 items. That wasn't enough money for them now the least amount you can buy is 25Fv cash for $5 (i have bought none of these). I think the dart throw sucks they put 2-4 new items & then the rest are junk that we already have bunches of. Those are the items you end up with 3-4 of. My family jokes that sometimes the dogs are doing the programing because the game actually works. I would sign this but we all know zynga would block me out of my game.

  7. Totally enjoyed your comments....I've been hooked on fv for a year now....and I don't know what a snagbar is...and don't want to know..if you can't play the game within the rules...then you shouldn't play at all....!!....as for belted cows...zynga offered them...and the players figured out the best way to use them to their advantage...and it's the only way to establish some capital so that you can buy crafts from your neighbors...!....and you don't need a farm full of belted's to keep everyone happy...!
As for the game.....on the whole....it works fine....I've seen huge improvements in graphics...and just in the working of the game since I started a year ago......Zynga earns lots from all of us....but then programmers don't come cheap these days....and...hey....the game is free.....the fellow who developed this game is a smart cookie....my hat is off to him....produce something free....and give them things that they are willing to spend a little cash on......hey....I waste $20.00 in my fridge at least once a month or more.....
The game sometimes has glitches....but I feel alot of glitches also has to do with our own computer....and what it's able to handle.....on the whole......I can't complain about this game....it's fun and entertaining...and it's the anticipation of what's coming next that keeps me going.....and having fun on here....along with meeting alot of nice people....!!

  8. Enjoyed the article! Love the game although I get seething mad at it sometimes. I have wondered if Zynga read our posts until I made a comment about something that happened that I felt they should know without asking me what it was (not saying what this was because I am sure someone reads these also and these people are not dumb, they would figure out who I possibly was) So after my comment miracleously there appeared the missing link!! Yeah I think they read...do they listen? That is another story!

  9. Top notch deductive thinking, DF!! If Zynga were intelligent, they would offer YOU to head up the Development Suite!

  10. thank you for stating that so eloquently - me,,,i have a stronger word or two for them at times ;-)

  11. You hit the nail on the head with this one!

  12. Well said. Hopefully, someone at Zynga will read this and at least take some of what you said into consideration!

  13. All my friends think you are right on!!!! We love you and wish you were running Farmville!!!! Thanks for saying what each and everyone of us thought!!

  14. lOVE WHAT YOU SAID, ESPECIALLY ABOUT PLAYING THE GAME THE WAY WE WANT TO, NOT LETTING ZYNGA DICTATE EVERYTHING

  15. I DON'T THINK THE YOUNG TECH WORKERS ARE HARD WORKING AT ALL. I THINK THEY HAVE ALOT OF PEOPLE WHO WORK FOR THEM AND DONT PLAY THE GAME ITSELF. IF THE WORKERS WERE FORCED TO PLAY THE GAME AND DEAL WITH THE SAME PROBLEMS WE HAVE I THINK THEY WOULD BE MORE APT TO UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEMS AND MAYBE EVEN MORE ABLE TO FIX THEM MORE QUICKLY. I ALSO THINK FACEBOOK AND FARMVILLE SHOULD BE SEP. WE NEED OUR OWN GAMING SITE STRICTLY FOR GAMERS ONLY. ALSO WANT TO FIX THE HACKER PROBLEM. FIND THE BIGGEST ONE AND OFFER THEM A JOB. YES U HEARD ME. IF YOURE NEVER GOING TO BEAT THEM MIGHT AS WELL MAKE THEM COME TO OUR DARK SIDE AND HELP FIGHT US AGAINST OTHER HACKERS. PEOPLE LIKE THAT LOVE TO BE ABLE TO SHOW OFF AND SHOW OTHER HACKERS UP. IF U WERE A BANK AND WANTED TO PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST GETTING ROBBED BY CRIMINALS WOULDNT U WANT TO ASK SOMEONE WHO USED TO BE ONE?? BE SMART. ZYNGA ALSO NEEDS TO FOCUS MORE ON THE BIG PROBLEMS AND LESS ON THE LITTLE ONES. EXAMPLE IM NOT GOING TO SPEND MONEY ON THINGS IN THE MARKET IF I THINK MY FARM IS ALWAYS GOING TO BE BROKEN OR DOWN?? WHATS THE POINT IN SPENDING THE MONEY ON ANIMALS IF I NEVER GET TO GO INTO MY FARM AND SEE THEM HAHAH. ALSO THEY GAVE US 5000 IN OUR GIFTBOX BUT WE NEED THAT IN OUR STORAGE! HEY IDIOTS IF IM GOING TO BUY STUFF IN THE MARKET I NEED A PLACE TO PUT IT! MY FRIENDS STOPPED BUYING STUFF IN THE MARKET CUZ THEY DONT HAVE ROOM ON THEIR FARM OR IN THEIR STORAGE. SEE IM ONE PERSON AND I KNOW ALL THIS SHIT AND ITS ALL REALLY SIMPLE AND BASIC. IT'S SAD TO SAY THAT COMMO SENSE IS NOT THAT COMMON THESE DAYS;( NOW RU GO DO ALL THE SHIT I SAID GO. IF U WANT TO OFFER ME A JOB AS CONSULTANT THEN I ACCEPT LMAO.

  16. you know you have a choice dont play it my self i love it iam a old woman and it keeps be busy love farmville

  17. ONCE U HAVE THE PROBLEMS WE HAVE THEN U WILL BE A ANGRY OLD WOMAN HAHAHA AND NO OLD WOMAN TYPES LIKE THAT. YOURE PROB A ZYNGA TROLL LOL. AND ONLY A SMALL MINDED PERSON WOULD SAY SOME STUPID ASS SHIT LIKE THAT HAHAH U HAVE A CHOICE NOT TO PLAY. SO U LIKE THE GAME HAVING PROBLEMS?? LOL YOURE ONE OF THE REASONS SO MANY PEOPLE HAVE QUIT PLAYING. SEE U HAVENT HAD PROBLEMS YET BUT WHEN U DO YOU'LL JUST STOP PLAYING AND WALK AWAY. WE ARE THE DIE HARD GAMERS THAT HAVE BEEN HERE SINCE THE START WHEN IT WASNT TRENDY AND WE WANT OUR GAME TO WORK PROPERLY. QUITTERS THATS WHATS WRONG WITH EARTH EVERYONES A QUITTER.

  18. i just ran across this link tonight. good for you all. i was one of the lucky ones who became addicted to farmville when it first started, i used no cheats and leveled up i also had many many neighbors. more neighbors than i have in real life. well i no longer play the game because due to health problems i was away from it for about one month. when i came back to get caught up on my gifting and such, my farm was gone. i am telling you it was a whole different format. i spent many, many hours playing the game, i was glued to the thing. All of the animals, the llama's, sheep, pigs, and those limited ones that i spent my money for. all gone, i cried then i got mad and deleated the game..
good luck to all who play. my advise is don't spend your money for something that could disappear tomorrow. thank you for this site that let me vent.

  19. wow this is so true have also been playing since FV started and am about to give up !! The change in the game now and how it was before is remarkable..loved the game before now all we do are missions and to manage them we have to pay cash or never sleep?! The greed disturbes me the most !!

  20. I agree with you. Zynga should listen to the players more, maybe they'd learn something. Like how to be human & make things more enjoyable with less problems. I keep having more problems with the game mostly with the quests. My boyfriend was having so many problems he just stopped playing for awhile. Zynga needs to worry more about Farmville working & the players getting to enjoy the game then much money they make off the players.

  21. Well said and shared. The game has become 'not fun' and more work lately. I have been playing FV almost since day 1, and the format changes are too closely placed; too short in duration to finish; and too greed-friendly for Zynga. Not like the old days. Unfortunate.

  22. i have paid a lot out on farmville what happens if i quit what happens if i sell all my stuff can i trade it in for coins for another game they should have a buy back tool or sell back tool too

  23. I love your perspective and think you hit on the right attitude that we love to share our goodies..I do not agree with the anonymous comment that he/she 'needs a snag bar' and these are unprotected sites and leave one's neighbors at risk for hackers as well..
    Thanks for the article..jan

  25. I enjoyed this article. I am new to The Dirt and I am enjoying reading about the actual issues. I have been trying to get info/communication about the game. I usually just see announcements, etc. but not the feedback on the game. When I play, we are often just busy posting and I sometimes don't get any feedback at all about the current "issues." Like the Fairy Zebra. I am still trying to go figure that. I e-mailed Zynga. I wonder what they will say. The problem/issue listing was old. Nothing came up when I searched the Fairy Zebra. We shall see. I can't even believe the same type of problems FV is creating for us and FOR THEMSELVES. I started imagining little kids who get a piece of the puzzle and nobody is in charge of the whole puzzle. Very strange. They create so many problems for their own selves. It is getting astonishing -- especially to people who have had to perform and perform stellar at work. Amazing now!
